JOHN WALSH
Deputy Chief of Staff for Neighborhoods and Housing
City of Houston
John Walsh is a proud Houstonian and a University of Texas Graduate who has had an exceptional career in real estate development and extensive experience in a wide range of community oriented civic projects.
His twenty five-year career in real estate spanned Houston's economic expansion in the 1970's, its contraction in the 1980's and recovery in the 1990's. He joined Exxon's real estate subsidiary, Friendswood Development Company, in 1971 following graduate school and served as president, from 1986 to 1996.
He then joined the Greater Houston Partnership for a two-year period as President of the Chamber of Commerce, where he was responsible for the Partnership's programs in Government Relations, Education and Work Force, Business Climate, Transportation Infrastructure and Environmental Resources.
In 1998, he established a professional practice in community building as a consultant to public and private organizations engaged in a wide range of community building projects, including:
- the development of historic inner city neighborhoods,
- the development of a research campus in the Texas Medical Center, and
- several real estate development projects.
In August 2004, he joined Mayor Bill White's Administration as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Neighborhoods and Housing.
His civic activities include leadership roles in economic development, neighborhood re-development, regional planning, cultural arts, education, conservation, tourism and youth organizations.
He has received NASA's Public Service medal, the Anti Defamation League's Torch of Liberty Award, the President's Service Award and a host of other honors.
His personal interests include cultural arts, naturalist and out of door activities in photography, mountain climbing and running. He has run four marathons. John's two children, Jenny, 23 and Ryan, 25 also both reside in Houston.
